Little Minds. Big Benefits. Why Yoga for Kids.
Yoga poses come as naturally to a child as breathing in air. We’ve all seen babies discover their feet for the first time in Happy Baby pose, or lift their chest during tummy time into Cobra. When they begin to walk, Downward Dog becomes a playful way to hang upside down and see the world from a whole new perspective.
Watching a newborn breathe is a sacred moment. Their body instinctively knows how to breathe deeply, with the diaphragm gently rising and falling in natural balloon-belly breathing.
A child’s world is full of curiosity, play, and imagination—this is how they learn best.
In today’s fast-paced world, children are increasingly exposed to iPads, mobile phones, and tightly packed schedules—along with growing social and emotional challenges. There is very little downtime.
Yoga can play a simple yet powerful role in supporting their overall health and wellbeing—physically, mentally, and emotionally. There are poses to help release anger, to bring peace and calm, to feel strong, to increase energy, to self-soothe and to help relax.
On a physical level, yoga helps build strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Each child moves at their own pace, free from competition. It’s all about discovery, confidence, and fun.
On a mental and emotional level, yoga teaches children awareness of themselves and others, to slow down, focus, and manage stress. Through breathwork and mindfulness practices, they learn to be still, understand their emotions, and develop self-regulation skills they can use on a daily basis.
Yoga also nurtures important life skills—kindness, compassion, respect for themselves and others, and a deeper connection to the world around them.
By introducing yoga at a young age, we give our kids the tools to grow into strong, calm and confident adults—both on and off the mat. This is why I created the Little Warrior, Yoga Deck of Cards for Kids – so all children can have access to the incredible life tools that yoga offers.
